Midwife in Berlin On How To Pack Your Hospital Bag

Once you have decided on where you are going to give birth

And your EDD is approaching fast, one of the most frequently asked and googled questions is:

How to pack your hospital bag?

In the end you could turn up at least to a hospital, without anything. In my opinion a German hospital has everything, if needed. Maybe that takes pressure of you. But of course it is nicer to wear your own clothes.

My little advice is to pack 2 bags. One for the actual birth and one for after. That way the bags, suitcases can be smaller. The rooms are not so big. And we tend to overpack.

I find having this bag ready 4 weeks before your EDD gives you lots of time to pack, unpack, pack ..and so on.

Checklist on what to bring to the hospital

  •  1-2 NIGHTDRESSES ( OLD, LONG ,WITH BUTTONS, for Breastfeeding) OR a Pyjama
  • WARM SOCKS
  • BATHROBE if wanted or a cardigan
  • TOWEL
  • COSMETICS
  • HAIRBAND
  • UNDERWEAR ( COTTON)
  • NURSING BRA
  • MUSIC IF WANTED
  • MUTTERPASS and INSURANCE CARD

The BABY will just need the CLOTHES FOR GOING HOME

Which could be

  • VEST
  • BABYGROW
  • CARDIGAN
  • SUIT
  • HAT
  • TIGHTS OR/AND SOCKS
  • BLANKET/ COVER
  • CARSEAT ( if needed )

Your PARTNER can pack an own little bag with

  • WARM SOCKS
  • COMFORTABLE CLOTHES
  • FOOD AND DRINKS
  • MONEY
  • CAMERA, CHARGED!

For registering the baby with the STANDESAMT you can bring

ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS

TOWELS, NUSING PADS, DISPOSABLE UNDERWEAR, BABY CLOTHES AND NAPPIES WILL BE AVAILABLE IN A GERMAN HOSPITAL DURING YOUR STAY.

    1. Dear Ellen, did oyu check out my post about all the birthing hospitals in Berlin. Maybe that gives you a better idea. Closer to you are Waldkrankenhaus Spandau and Havelhöhe in Kladow. You can visit the hospitals. They offer info- meetings. All the best, Katrin
